Health and safety legislation is enforced by authorised officers of either the Health and Safety Executive or the council.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advise and enforce on:
- general agricultural;
- construction;
- manufacturing issues;
- council premises.
The council
The council give advice and enforce regulations in:
- offices;
- hospitality trade;
- retail and wholesale;
- residential care;
- consumer services including leisure businesses.

If you think the condition of your workplace is putting your safety at risk or damaging your health, you should raise your concerns with your employer or person in control of the premises.
If no improvement is made and your safety or health continues to be at risk, then you can report your complaint to the relevant enforcing authority and ask them to look into it.
