What are the plans to introduce fortnightly collections?

On 27 November 2012 Cabinet approved the implementation of fortnightly collections of blue and green bins as a result of a series of successful trials.

The new service will be rolled out in phases starting in March 2013 and is expected to be in place across East Riding by Summer 2014.  The roll out will include a major programme of support to assist residents in managing their waste.

The roll out is planned to take place as follows:

  • Holderness including Hedon, Withernsea, and surrounding villages – March 2013
  • Bridlington, Flamborough, Driffield, Nafferton, Hornsea and surrounding villages – May 2013
  • Beverley, Cottingham, Anlaby, Willerby, Hessle, Brough, South Cave and surrounding villages – July 2013
  • Market Weighton, Pocklington, Stamford Bridge and surrounding villages – September 2013
  • Goole, Howden, Gilberdyke, Snaith, and surrounding villages – June 2014

All residents will receive a letter, leaflet and new collection calendar ahead of the new collection service beginning in their area.

Why is a fortnightly collection service being rolled out?

As a wider range of materials are now accepted in the blue bins and the introduction of the brown bin recycling service, a large number of residents have contacted us asking for increased blue bin collections, and telling us there was very little in their green landfill bins.

Trials of a fortnightly collection scheme took place to 20,000 households to find out if the service would meet residents' needs and allow them to recycle more.  Feedback has been collected throughout the trials  and the general response was that residents fully supported the fortnightly bin collections as it enabled them to recycle even more. The kerbside recycling rate in the trial area rose to 70%.

Whilst the trials have been running, residents in other areas have continued contacting us requesting that we roll the scheme out to them. This has shown that a fortnightly collection service is what the majority of residents want and it does allow for more recycling and for less waste to be sent to landfill.

I am in an existing trial area, how will this affect me?

What if I can't cope with a fortnightly green bin collection?

As we collect a large range of materials for recycling in the blue and brown bins there is considerably less waste being put into the green landfill bin.  It is clear that most households no longer need the green bin emptied as often   The more you can recycle in your blue and brown bins, the less green bin waste you will have.

To check what can be recycled in each bin, please refer to What can I put in my blue bin? and What can I put in my brown bin? or view the leaflet below:

Fortnightly Collections (pdf 2mb opens in new window)

There will be information in the packs sent to you on how to contact us if you do find you are struggling to cope, even after recycling all you can in the blue and brown bins.

Please note: We will not collect bags of waste that are not inside your green bins. The waste must be inside the bin.
