Information about needing home insurance and how to get home contents insurance through the council. 

Do I need home insurance for my council home?

You do not need buildings insurance for your council home, as we insure the building as owner. However, we strongly advise all our tenants to take out home contents insurance which is appropriate to their needs.

If you do not have contents insurance and you have a flood, fire or burglary for example, you will be responsible for meeting the cost of replacing all your belongings and furnishings.

We have negotiated a voluntary home contents insurance policy for our tenants which is available direct from royal & sun alliance. There are of course many other companies offering home contents insurance and you are free to make your own arrangements to insure the contents of your home. The following pdf document is a policy information and application form, it can be downloaded and completed and sent to the address on the form.

Can I get home contents insurance for my council home through the council?

We have negotiated a home contents insurance scheme called ‘simple insurance’ with royal & sun alliance insurance plc, one of the UK’s leading insurers. Our tenants now have the chance to insure the contents of their homes in an easy and affordable way.

Working with us, royal & sun alliance has produced a home contents policy especially designed for our tenants. It’s simple and value for money, with premiums payable weekly, monthly or annually.

This is a voluntary scheme which is designed to meet the needs of our tenants, however there are, of course, many other companies offering home contents insurance and you are free to make your own arrangements to insure the contents of your home.
