What can I learn?

We offer a variety of courses that run at different times throughout the academic year.

Art    

  • Drawing and painting (mixed media) improvers step 1 - in this course you will find out how artists use mixed media to create layers, texture and form.  Develop and practice your skills in mixed media techniques, experiment with ideas and materials and learn how to express your ideas in art using a variety of materials.
  • Drawing and painting (mixed media) advanced step 1 - explore and develop your use of mixed media in art through the creative use of materials, with a focus on developing abstract ideas.  Techniques will include combining the use of drawing, mono printing, collage and painting.  
  • Art for adults who have experienced mental health difficulty - this course aims to help you gain confidence and try new skills in a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.  Work at your own pace and discover new interests through making art.  

 

Flower arranging

  • Flower arranging for the season.  Learn how to make impressive centre pieces and arrangements for decoration and celebration.

Interior design/textiles 

  • Patchwork and quilting workshop - learn everything you need to know to make your own beautiful patchwork quilt.  We will cover cutting fabric, piecing, pressing, quilting and binding.
  • Make good and mend (textiles) - learn how to remake and reuse an old favourite garment or a second hand find, and discover how to transform your clothes into new and unique fashion you will want to wear, creating your own trends and saving money.

Music    

  • Guitar scoustic/rlectric beginners dtep 2- this practical introductory course will enable you to learn the basic skills needed to play the acoustic/electric guitar. You will need to bring your own guitar along to the session.

Photography

  • Photography - beginners step 2 - a practical course for beginners who wish to gain the basic skills and knowledge of photography.  This course is aimed at complete beginners who own a camera and want to maximise its potential.

Pottery/ceramics    

  • Pottery and ceramics creative workshop - explore and develop your pottery and ceramic skills through the creative use of clay.  It will give you the opportunity to practise, maintain and develop your skills in a relaxed atmosphere, without the need to meet course aims or funding requirements.  An additional contribution towards materials is payable weekly or in advance.  Please note, this course is not eligible for a concession.

Sugarcraft and cake decorating

  • Sugarcraft and cake decorating workshop - a practical course for those who love cake decorating allowing you to gain the basic skills and knowledge of sugarcraft and cake decorating, using a range of skills and techniques.  A small contribution for materials may be asked for.

Where can I learn?

There are seven main adult education centres around the East Riding and many of our courses are taught in these centres.  Throughout the year we also use over 100 additional external venues for courses so there should usually be a venue close to you that will have something run by the adult education service.  For more information on the venues, please see the Venue Details page.

How much do courses cost?

Course costs vary, depending on the duration and type of course, and your personal circumstances (for example, if you’re on certain benefits or you’re taking a particular qualification).  For more information on course types, concessions and paying by instalments, please see our how much courses costs page.
