Help with getting a job

I'm looking for a job, what help is available?

Our employment and skills team can offer all sorts of advice and support to help you get back into work. Whether you're 18 or 58, our team work closely with local employers to match your skills and experience to jobs available.

First, you'll have an information, advice and guidance (IAG) session with one of our advisers to see what's right for you.

Depending on your circumstances you might be eligible for one or some of the programmes we run. Regardless of your age, experience or circumstances everyone is eligible to take part in a 'pick and mix' selection of half day courses to get you ready for a job interview. This could include motivation and confidence, understanding your transferable skills, getting a new CV, applying for jobs, preparing for interview, mock interviews, considering volunteering/self employment and working for the council.

Current funded programmes that we run include:

  • eXplore and Future4u - foundation learning programmes for young people who want to work, or go on to higher education, but don't have any experience or qualifications.

  • Apprenticeship programmes - carry out an apprenticeship in business administration, customer service, retail, team leading or IT. We also work with employers who are looking to retrain their existing staff.

  • Active8 - an employability programme for 18 - 24 year olds. Active8 aims to put you at the front of the interview queue. Customers must be in receipt of JSA or ESA to join.

  • Acceler8 - just like Active8, but for people who are 25 years+. Again customers must be in receipt of JSA or ESA.

  • National Careers Advice Service- a careers advice service for all adults - in work, or out of work.

  • Wheels to Work - a moped loan scheme to help people aged 16 years or older access jobs and training opportunities.

  • Work Choice - personalised support service that provides disabled people with the skills, motivation and confidence to get a job.
