School term dates

What are the school term dates?

The dates listed below are the term dates for schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The dates also show the approved school closures for staff training, though for a small number of schools, these will vary.

Each school will also decide when to close for an additional staff training day during term time, and may have to close for other reasons e.g. for polling days or due to building works.

For individual school closure dates, please check on the East Riding School Finder.

Can I take my child out of school for a holiday during term time?

This is not something that is encouraged but headteachers are able to authorise up to ten days absence in an academic year.  However, in order for it to be authorised you must meet on of the following criteria:

  • a parent has to take holidays at a time specified by their employer. This would include parents how work in certain professions, e.g. farmers, factory worker, fire fighters. Headteachers will use their knowledge of families when responding to requests made by self-employed parents;
  • where a holiday is recommended as part of a parent or child's rehabilitation from a medical or emotional illness;
  • where parents are considering emigration and wish to visit the country as part of their considerations;
  • to attend a wedding or funeral of a close member of the family that is taking place out of the area.

Before making a decision the headteacher will ask for evidence of the relevant criteria.

Term time holidays will not, under any circumstances (including those listed above) be authorised at the following times:

  • the first six weeks of any academic year (this applies to all pupils regardless of age or year group;
  • year 6 transition day for pupils in year 6;
  • SATs week for pupils in year 6;
  • options time for pupils in year 9;
  • any time for pupils in year 10 and 11;
  • or at any other time specified by the school.

This information will be communicated directly to parents by each school.

Please note, if your holiday request is not authorised by the headteacher and you remove your child from school for five days or more you may be issued with a penalty notice of £50 per parent, per child.  Holiday absences are accumulative and if the total number of days amount to 5 days or more over the academic year then a penalty notice is also likely to be issued.
