How do I join the library?

You can join the library online:

or

you can join at your local branch library. Find your nearest library in the library finder.

Further information about East Riding Libraries is available from the following leaflet:

Welcome to the Library leaflet (pdf 334kb opens in new window)

After you have joined the library

You will be sent your library membership card by post.  Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) will come in a separate letter, and with this you can check your personal account online.

If you have a query about your online membership application please contact Libraries System Admin Office at library.systemadmin@eastriding.gov.uk.

If you want to start using your library membership today you will need to visit your nearest library and you will be able to collect a library membership card. Find your nearest library in the library finder.

Do I need proof of ID to join the library?

Yes.  To use the full service you will need current proof of ID with your name, address and signature. For example, your paper driving licence has all three or a current utility bill with your name and address and a bank card with your signature would be accepted.

If you have joined online, your new library card and PIN will be posted to you. Just take your library card along to your library with your ID the first time you want to borrow an item.

If you do not have a fixed address, you can ask for “light” membership and you will not need to provide ID.  This will enable you to borrow a limited number of items.

Can I join the library as an OPEN+ member and use libraries out of normal opening hours?

New or existing library members who are aged 16 years or above can register for OPEN+ membership.

Children under 16 years can enter Anlaby – Haltemprice Library during OPEN+ unstaffed hours if they are accompanied by an OPEN+ registered responsible adult.

OPEN+ membership enables you to enter Anlaby – Haltemprice Library during specified unstaffed hours.  You can then:

  • borrow and return loans on the library Self Service machines, check your account and collect items you have reserved.
  • use the free library WiFi service
  • use the assisted digital computer for information and advice on all council and partner services.

You will need to swipe your library card and enter your PIN at the door. The system photographs you on entry and the library is surveyed by CCTV at all times for your safety.

You can register for OPEN+ membership at any East Riding library, but currently only Anlaby - Haltemprice Library can be visited out of normal staffed opening hours.

Access will be activated within two working (staffed) days following registration.

As an OPEN+ member If you change your library membership number (e.g. replace your ticket) or change your PIN, you must notify staff at your OPEN+ library who will register the new number on the OPEN+ system. This can be done in person or from your library membership linked email but not by telephone.  There will then be a delay of two working (staffed) days before you can visit during OPEN+ hours.

For more information about OPEN+ read the terms and conditions:

OPEN+ Terms and Conditions (pdf 248kb opens in a new window)

Print and complete the registration form below and take it to your local branch library where staff will register you for OPEN+.

For local opening hours please check the library finder where you will find details of staffed and unstaffed hours plus any special arrangements for Bank Holidays.

What do I do if my library card has expired?

Just take your old library card along next time you visit the library and it can be renewed.  If you have moved home, bring a current proof of address with your name, new address and signature.  For example, your updated paper driving licence which has all three, or a current utility bill and a bank card. The library staff will be happy to renew your library card for you.

How do I get my PIN?

Ask a member of staff to issue your PIN next time you visit your library.

Alternatively, you can use the join the library form and complete your details, including your library card number:

Join the library online

We will then post your PIN to you and with this you can check your personal account online.

For security reasons, we are unable to tell you your PIN over the telephone, but you can ask for it to be posted or emailed to you.

Remember if you ask a member of staff to change your PIN or do so online, and are registered for OPEN+ membership you will need to contact your OPEN+ library or a member of staff to let them know.  This can be done in person or by email but not by telephone.  There will then be a delay of two working (staffed) days before you can visit your OPEN+ library again.
