Parenting programme

What is the parenting programme?

Parenting programme is based on social learning theory and is a family intervention programme to introduce parenting skills and positive strategies consisting of simple routines and small changes that can make a big difference to your family.

It helps you understand the way your family works and uses the things you already say, think, feel and do in new ways.

While parenting programme is almost always successful in improving child behavioural problems, more than half of its emphasis is on developing positive attitudes, skills and behaviour. This helps prevent problems arising and fosters family relationships that encourage children to realise their full potential.

It is offered in three formats:

  • for parents or carers with concerns about their child’s behaviour and who require intensive one to one support to focus on positive parenting

  • parents or carers of children requiring intensive support in positive parenting or those who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills to apply to multiple contexts

  • parents or carers with concerns about their teen’s behaviour and who require intensive support in positive parenting.

FamilyLinks Parents and Teen Nurturing Programme

The 11-16 years are often the most stressful for both parents and young people, and can lead to broken relationships, risky behaviour and criminal activity resulting in ongoing mental health problems.

It is with this in mind that Family Links has begun to develop the Nurturing Programme for both parents and their teenage children, in the belief that empathy and self awareness can work together to forge positive relationships, and foster a sense of hope in families.

This programme supports parents to work with their children to foster improved family communication.

Barnardo's Cygnet Programme

A parenting support programme for the parents and carers of children and young people aged 7 - 18 years old diagnosed with an autistic spectrum condition.

The underpinning value of Cygnet is the belief that if parents and carers have access to appropriate knowledge, skills and support, they can often find practical solutions to build confidence in family life. Cygnet aims to do this by providing relevant and appropriate information to support parents and carers with their understanding of autism and behaviour management issues.

There are currently no Barnardo's Cygnet Programmes running.

Call FISH on (01482) 396469 to find out about future dates.

EarlyBird Programme

The EarlyBird programme is autism-specific and is a three-month programme which combines group training sessions for parents with individual home visits when video feedback is used to help parents apply what they learn, whilst working with their child.

The EarlyBird programme aims:

  • to support parents in the period between diagnosis and school placement;

  • to empower parents and help them facilitate their child's social communication and appropriate behaviour within the child's natural environment;

  • to help parents establish good practice in handling their child at an early age so as to pre-empt the development of inappropriate behaviours.

The EarlyBird programme has three 'threads':

  • Understand your child's autism;

  • Get yourself into your child's world: make contact; find ways to develop interaction and communication;

  • Learn how to analyse and understand your child's behaviours and how to use structure, so you can pre-empt and cope with problem behaviours.

There are currently no EarlyBird Programmes running.

Call FISH on (01482) 396469 to find out about future dates.
