Starting primary school
From September 2011 all infant and primary schools will offer full time places to children in the academic year in which they have their fifth birthday. However, this is not compulsory and parents have a number of choices open to them.
-
A child attends school full time from September.
-
A parent can negotiate with the school about a child initially attending part time and progressing to full time.
-
Without losing a school place a parent can delay for one or two terms the date in which a child takes up a school place and meanwhile access up to 15 hours of funded early learning and childcare in a nursery school or class or private or voluntary childcare setting or until they reach statutory school age.
-
Postpone the date a child starts school until he/she reaches statutory school age ie: the term following the fifth birthday.
Childcare that collects from your child's school
If you want to find childcare that provides a drop-off and collection service to your child's school contact FISH.
Here you will be able to find those childminders, day nurseries and out of schools clubs that pick up from a particular school.
You will also find opening times, costs and whether holiday childcare is available.

An extended service is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children and young people to achieve their potential and, therefore, works in partnership with other services that support children, young people, families and communities to provide a core offer of services including:
-
childcare: giving children a good start in the crucial years and supporting parents;
-
a varied menu of activities: giving children a choice of opportunities to enjoy and develop outside of the classroom;
-
parenting support: helping parents engage with their children’s learning by offering support where needed;
-
swift and easy access: working in partnership to ensure the well-being of all children;
-
community access: opening the doors to the community.
Top of page In the East Riding there are extended services coordinators working in partnership with schools to meet the above offer of parenting support, childcare, swift and easy access and community access.
Contact details are provided for extended services coordinators for your child's school.

There is a section on the council's education site, eRiding, specifically aimed at schools who have children on roll who are non-native English speakers. It is hoped we can create and support a community who share best-practice and information to help these children effectively.
