The service will aim to help residents with transport needs to identify and use existing bus networks, where these may be appropriate. It will also assist communities who want to actively assess and evidence local demand for improved bus or Community Transport services, through local travel surveys etc.
The service will put residents with unmet transport needs in touch with Community Transport providers who may be able to assist them. By understanding the needs and looking at possible service amendments or enhancements it may be possible to find a solution that is feasible and affordable for both parties.
A range of options may be available, depending on the circumstances involved. Community Transport Operators now cover all of the East Riding, providing both individual and group transport options. A Car Sharing scheme and a ‘Wheels to Work’ moped loan scheme also operate across the area.
With help communities can identify the actual issue and implement a workable solution that best fits their community. The East Riding of Yorkshire Parish Toolkit can show communities how they could tackle a transport issue in their community in a straightforward and practical way.

It will not deal with queries or complaints about the frequency or standards of existing commercial or supported bus services. Queries of this nature should be directed to the bus operator or to the council’s Passenger Transportation Unit.
The East Riding of Yorkshire Community Transport Strategy 2013-2016 has been designed to help the many rural communities and individuals who do not have a private car or live in an area with appropriate public transport to attend essential services and social activities that they would otherwise find difficult to access.
The strategy sets out a clear vision for consolidation and growth of community transport in our area. This vision is based on detailed analysis of the East Riding of Yorkshire Community Transport Operators Network’s current level of provision, and to further extend its services to the ‘hardest to reach’ groups and individuals in our communities.
The three main objectives of the Community Transport Strategy are to:
clearly define the role of community transport in the East Riding’s public transport mix and establish the scope for sustainable expansions of the sectors’ services over the next five years
identify new markets for community transport services based on analysis of local needs, and develop a strategy for reaching and meeting those needs
ensure a sustainable future for community transport operators through developing a balanced not-for-profit business model based on social enterprise activity and other more traditional funding mechanisms:
